Welcome to the most sacred temple built by nature over 200,000 years ago,” said the pujari (the priest) when we entered the holy place nestled in the colorful mineral-caked overhanging cliff of an old river. At the same time, we heard drum-beats & bhajan (devotional song). The sound echoed off the surrounding peaks giving supernatural effects. The pujari recited a mantra, “Oh Hingula Devi, she who holds nectar in her self and is power incarnate. She who is one with Lord Shiva, to her we pay our respects and make this offering (swaha)"
Later, he explained that Hinglaj is one of the holiest shakti peeth (sites of cosmic power) of Hinduism. To calm down an entranced Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu is believed to have carved Sati’s Body into dozens of pieces and spread them across the South Asia. Mythology states that the head landed at Hinglaj. Lord Ram had meditated here.

How to Chant Mantras Benefits of Chanting Mantra

Mantra is a Sanskrit word derived from two words, Man (Manan) and Tra (Trana). Trana means liberation from the worldly ties. Originally originated in the Vedic tradition of India, mantras later become an integral part of the Hindu traditions and later a practice followed within Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. Mantras are a powerful combination of words that is believed to reach the deity in the form of sound vibrations. Mantra can be used for self realization, freedom from worries, fulfilling desires, to bring success, peace and happiness. Chanting mantras is a good spiritual discipline and not a superstition.

Shakti Peethas Story of Shiva and Shakti

The Shakti Peethas are the worshipping places where the parts of Goddess Sati Devi or Goddess Durga had fallen. The legend of Shakti Peethas is related to the story of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. According to Hindu scriptures, the mythology about Shakti Pithas is that Lord Brahma needs Shakti, the Goddess of Power, for the creation of Universe. So he performed Yaga to make Lord Siva happy to sacrifice Shakti. Shakti has three different forms such as Goddess Durga (Goddess of Strength) Goddess Mahakali (Goddess of Destruction) and Goddess Gowri (Goddess of Benevolence). Lord Shiva being happy with the Yaga of Brahma gave Shakti for the creation of universe.

One day Brahma Dev decided to give back Sakthi to Lord Shiva in the form of Sati Devi as the daughter of Daksha Prajapathi. Daksha, the son of
Lord Brahma performed many Yagas to get Shakti as his daughter Sati. But Daksha got angry towards Lord Mahadeva as he had once given curse to Bhramadev that he would not be worshiped and his fourth head was cut off for telling lie in front of God Siva. So he decided not to give his daughter married to Shivashankar. But Sati Devi was attracted to Lord Shiva and married him against the wish of her father.
Daksha’s hatred towards Lord Shiva increased by this action of his daughter Dakshayani. With the desire to take revenge over Lord Shiva, Daksha performed a Yaga known as Brihaspathisavanam Yaganam. As Daksha wanted to insult Lord Shiva, he invited all Hindu Gods and Goddesses except Shiva and Goddess Shakti. Sati Devi expressed her wish to take part in the Yaga performed by her father. Shiva denied her from going to the Yaga but later he allowed her to go accompanied by his followers.

Daksha not only gave any importance to Sati Devi but also insulted Lord Shiva. Due to the dishonesty by her father Sati Devi sacrificed herself in the Yagagni and immolated herself. Knowing this Lord Shiva enraged and destroyed Daksha Yaga and cut off Daksha’s head and later replaced it with a male goat due to the prayers of all other gods. Due to immense sorrow Shiva carried the burned body of Sati and wandered around the world performing Shiva Tandava. To control Shiva’s anger all Gods went to
Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu with his Sudarshana Chakra cut Goddess Sati’s body into several pieces which fell in different parts of earth. The places where the parts of Sati Devi had fallen become “Shakti Pithas” – the Holy places of cosmic power.
